Why and How Social Media Revolutionized the Entertainment Industry
Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, to name just a few, are marketing giants for multi-billion dollar industries, including Hollywood. Indeed, 51% of social media users find new movies via social media ads, which includes me. The same patterns are seen in dating, where individuals find out about potential matches and platforms, and digital first impressions can make a significant impact before they have had any interaction. Such stats are the result of evolving consumer preferences and a range of advanced in-built features. This article will explore both these aspects to give you a clear picture of why and how social media is an invaluable tool for the entertainment industry. You can expect a deep dive into:

Why Social Media Is Integral to the Entertainment Industry
This section explores all the social factors that push the growth of social media among the American people and make it a key element for the entertainment industry to leverage for marketing.
Most notably, these include:
- Widespread Availability of Internet Services
- Increase in Purchasing Power
- Fear of Missing Out (F.O.M.O)
- The Rise of Influencer Culture
Let’s explore each in a bit more detail.
Widespread Availability of Internet Services
I can literally hear the sound of a dial-up connection as I write this, and I’m kind of glad how far we’ve come in terms of connectivity. Today, cable internet services cover most of America, fibre offers blazing-fast speeds where it’s available, while 5G and satellite internet allow decent connectivity on the go. Not only that, but numerous Internet services that supply the connectivity types described above provide plans to suit a variety of online needs, way of living, and budgets.
When I started to move to California, I was fortunate to find Spectrum, and the Spectrum customer service helped me find the speed and consistency I needed as a writer. With a range of plans that cater to diverse needs, the widespread availability of various connectivity types can facilitate smooth social media use for all types of users. For homebodies like me, cable or fibre works well, and for road junkies, 5G and satellite.
Increase in Purchasing Power
Beyond connectivity, social media platforms require some type of electronic device to be accessed, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Since 2019, stats indicate that purchasing power has gradually increased, with a middle-class worker experiencing a 2.3% increase in their weekly earnings. This growth in purchasing power has led to an increased purchase of such devices, particularly smartphones, since 98% of Americans own one, and that’s as of 2024.
There’s no doubt that some of these devices are expensive; however, the widespread availability of lower-priced alternatives paired with an increasing purchasing power continues to support usage. The reason this makes social media marketing crucial for the entertainment industry is that the most performed task on smartphones is accessing the internet and social media. In fact, close to 90% of users say they perform these activities daily.
Fear of Missing Out
Social media is so-called because it is indeed a wonderful way to learn more about social norms, trends, and preferences, so as to fit in with peers as much as it is possible. This can have adverse impacts, especially on young people, but it also gives them the FOMO and makes them use more and be more engaged. Movies, songs, and shows are a big discussion among the young people, and if you know what they are, they might lead to social activities like watching the movies together as soon as they are released.
What’s more, there could be numerous pages, groups, and forums out there where people can offer their viewpoints about the latest trailers or make forecasts for the end of a specific show. Knowing what the trending topics are on social media can also help with the sense of acceptance on social media. This, coupled with services such as Spectrum internet are major factor pushing the rise of influencer culture.
The Rise of Influencer Culture
In the past, celebrities were used to promote products and services, and today, influencers promote celebrities and their latest products and services. Influencers are social media commentators who have a large number of followers and who can be trusted with their suggestions and recommendations. They can be based on one niche or several niches, including movies. Hollywood’s marketing teams can leverage these influencers to create campaigns that are interesting, engaging, and even go viral, engaging audiences both online and offline. One of my favourite campaigns is the one I’m working on for the 2022 horror film, Smile.
The campaign was filled with paid actors going to various events and sinisterly glaring into the camera (but on a less creepy level than the film suggests), creating all the buzz and hype and getting us ready for the even more creepy stuff in the film. The videos were shared by many influencers and reached over 180 million people, organically. Well, that pretty much sums up the reason why social media has become a necessity rather than an option for the entertainment industry. The next section dives into what kind of advanced features it can offer.
The Advanced Power of Social Media for the Entertainment Industry
Social media platforms provide some capabilities, such as AI tools, which can assist the entertainment business in optimizing strategies, targeting, and marketing effectiveness. In the dating arena, comparable technologies likewise affect how the platforms perceive user choices and make enhancements to discovery, ensuring that digital experiences are increasingly more relevant and effectively matched over time.
Most importantly, these include:
- Big Reach and Viral Potential.
- Tailored advertising and remarketing.
- Analytical Data at Your Fingertips.
- It’s time to take them apart.
Large Reach and Viral Potential
Most traditional marketing campaigns, such as billboards, television ads, or posters, are more often than not limited by geographical barriers. But that isn’t the case with social media, and marketing teams can target audiences everywhere with paid ads or by using viral organic content like the Smile one described above. But to identify the correct target audience and to customize their experience in each step, we must come to our next point.
Targeted Advertising and Retargeting
The thing about traditional marketing methods is that they provide a one-size-fits-all solution, which doesn’t really cut it in marketing anymore. The direction of today’s campaign needs to be clear and specific about who it is for and have strategies to further customize their experience. Social media sites provide user-friendly dashboards that can be used to target audiences with a couple of clicks. Demographic details can be selected, including age, interests, and even behaviours, of the audience that marketers are likely to target.
Beyond that, the platforms support various types of ad forms, such as image carousel, video, or story, and allow AB testing to recognize and maintain the best performing ones. The main differentiator is the retargeting feature. It allows nurturing users towards the next step in the marketing funnel. For example, if someone saw a trailer of a movie on Facebook, the pixel feature may automatically display ticket purchase ads to them.
Analytical Data at Your Fingertips
Data is king for a reason, which in one word is optimization. This word can turn a poorly performing marketing strategy into one of the most effective ones. There is a lot of data on social media platforms that entertainment marketers can utilize to fine-tune their strategies and potentially achieve better outcomes. If a video trailer ad is up and running but not getting the desired results, social media can tell marketing teams when users give up watching, which means they can suggest a more compelling option or another type of ad altogether.
Social Media: Hollywood’s Best Friend
For the entertainment industry, social media is the ideal best friend. Let’s face it, social media can help the industry save some money, accomplish its objectives, and learn from its mistakes – sort of like a reliable partner working behind the scenes. Looking to the future, this relationship will only become more pronounced as other social platforms continue to develop and other immersive formats such as VR and AR enter the fray, as well as new interactive content. The same evolution also impacts how people find and interact with those they are interested in dating, slowly evolving towards more immersive and interactive methods of developing interest and communication online with love and adventure.
