Are Men More Likely To Play Sweepstakes Casinos Than Women?

The answer is not so simple. Men tend to be more involved with online gambling, including games that are perceived as requiring some level of skill or risk, like sports betting and poker. These preferences can also provide clues on how some men think about competition, uncertainty, and decision-making when dating: confidence and risk tolerance can be what they use to deal with new dating situations.

Unlike traditional casinos, sweepstakes casinos typically feature a high percentage of games of chance, such as slots, which are often played by women. Yet both sexes are equally suited to both types of playing; the differences are relatively small. In this article, we will go into more depth and examine research and reach a more concrete conclusion.

The Direct Evidence Is Limited

Sweepstakes casinos are a relatively new trend. So it hasn’t been proven with a big independent and peer-reviewed study that the exact ratio of female to male players in American sweepstakes casinos has been established.

The majority of studies and evidence are derived from related fields such as online gambling, social casino games, mobile games, and gambling behaviour generally. Sweepstakes casinos are a hybrid product and slightly different from regular online casinos. They pick up more elements from mobile games on a daily basis, with rewards, virtual currency, promotions, and events on the leaderboard. It’s always possible to spend money and never necessary. They do have a level of gambling, though, and offer a prize redemption feature.

In fact, a 2025 survey commissioned by the American Gaming Association compared sweepstakes casino users with online-casino and free-to-play social-casino players and found that 90% perceived sweepstakes casinos as gambling.  It found that sweepstakes users resembled regulated online-casino customers more than free-to-play users in their stated motivations, particularly the desire to win redeemable prizes.

Although the study’s main purpose is the motivations and perceptions, it also includes demographic data, which is particularly interesting in this case. It found that 51% of sweepstakes players were male versus 49% female, so it’s as close to 50/50 as it gets. For online casino players, the figures were similar but showed a slightly bigger difference between the genders, with a 54% male vs 46% female split. This means that men are just as likely as women to sign up for new sweepstakes casinos using comparison sites like sweepcasinos777.com. However, their motivation may be different.

Men Are More Active In Online Gambling

Research on online gambling generally finds that men are more likely to gamble than women. Most gambling studies reflect a common pattern: men are often overrepresented in online-gambling studies. They commonly also find that women have typically gambled online for less time and in shorter sessions than men.

In a study of adults ages 18-25 conducted in the U.S., 69% of the men had gambled while 36% of women had gambled. Online gambling was also twice as common among men, and risk-taking accounted for some of the gender difference in participation.  While these findings do not prove that men are playing sweepstakes casinos more than women, it is certainly not out of the question given that the audience that typically visits these casino types is interested in prize redemption, competition, and high-intensity games. Dating-wise, people’s attitudes towards risk and competition may also be used to account for their expectations of relationships and how they are regarded, from the thrill of meeting new people to the patience needed to develop a sincere bond.

Casino-Style Games May Narrow The Gap

Participation is only one part of the picture. Game preference can be just as important. Men are often more likely to choose casino games with a perceived skill or competitive element compared to games that are purely luck-based. This includes games like sports betting, poker, and blackjack. Chance still plays an important role in these games, but skill can make a major difference.

Women are generally more likely to favor chance-based products such as bingo, slots, lottery games, or scratchcards. These games are purely chance-based and require no or little skill to play. A 2025 study of 1,347 adults who spent at least €25 per month on gambling found that men were more involved in sports betting, skill games, and stock-market gambling. Women reported greater involvement in chance-based games like lottery games, bingo, video poker, and slots.

This makes a major difference since slots dominate many sweepstakes casino lobbies. Although many sweepstakes casinos offer live casino games and table games, most skill-based games like sports betting and poker are rarely available. That does not prove women play more sweepstakes casinos than men. It does mean that the casino games on sweepstakes sites are likely to appeal more to women than a sportsbook or poker room would.

Men And Women May Play For Different Reasons

Motivation also makes a big difference. The 2014 online-gambling study found that women were more likely to play casino games in free-play mode and spend less money. Many saw it as boredom relief, and they did not intend to win money. Women also reported more guilt and shame connected with online gambling.

Men, on the other hand, scored higher on enhancement motives, such as excitement and stimulation. They needed something at stake to find it more exciting.  Although these are average patterns in one research sample, not rules that apply to every player, it does paint a clear picture. If we look closer at sweepstakes casinos, they can appeal to both sets of motives. The casino games offer entertainment and short-term excitement, especially in Sweeps mode. You can play them entirely for free, but the redeemable-prize model adds a financial incentive that makes them more exciting. That combination is what separates sweepstakes casinos from purely free social casino apps.

Furthermore, it makes simplistic gender labels unhelpful since the player profiles vary more substantially. One player may enjoy the game library and daily rewards, while another may be mainly interested in bonuses and tournaments. A third may use the platform for social interaction or distraction, and care less about redeeming winnings. The same site can serve very different motivations.

The Risks Are Not Limited To Men

Males may seem more likely to be included in Internet-gambling studies, and might engage more in certain high-risk products. That’s not to say that women are spared of gambling-related harm. In the Swedish online-gambling study, women were found to be more psychologically distressed, more financially hard up, and more severe in their gambling than men, both among the moderate-risk and problem gamblers. The previous research also revealed a higher degree of guilt and shame among women online gamblers.

This is not just a question of who plays more, though, but whether someone continues to play recreationally. Indications of a problem include overspending, chasing losses, hiding your gambling from others, using playing to deal with stress, or feeling that you cannot stop. That’s the same for both men and women. These red flags are true of sweepstakes and casino play and are worthy of consideration. Identifying the same kind of behavior in dating situations (e.g., gaming to manage stress or allowing inappropriate behaviors to impact trust and communication) can also help divorcees to establish healthier boundaries in their own lives.
