Mel Blackwell Says Business Is the “Wild West” in New Leadership Book Out March 3
If your workplace looks polished on the outside but feels shaky behind the scenes, veteran business strategist and leadership expert Mel Blackwell thinks he knows why, and he is putting his advice into a new book arriving soon.
Blackwell will release Uncommon Sense on March 3, 2026, pitching it as a practical guide for business owners, executives, and emerging leaders who want to make clearer decisions in chaotic, real-world conditions. The release was announced via PRNewswire’s book release notice.
According to the release, Blackwell compares modern business to the Wild West and argues that surface-level polish is not the real measure of health. “Business truly is like the Wild West,” Blackwell said. “It doesn’t matter what a business’s website says or how nice their lobby smells. The true test is what’s going on behind the scenes.”
The book also warns leaders not to confuse calm with safety. “All is quiet on the home front. Everything seems to be going well. Suddenly you look up and spot a dust trail kicking up in the distance. A gang of outlaws is riding in from the hills. Trouble’s coming, and you can’t run.”
Uncommon Sense centers on a framework of culture, structure, and problem-solving, with the goal of building resilient teams, clarifying roles, and keeping leadership from becoming the default landing spot for every issue. Blackwell says the intended audience is broad: “This book is for anyone who carries responsibility inside a business.”
