Back Pain Keeping You Off the Pickleball Court? Here Are 6 Ways to Fix It

Pickleball is booming, but so are reports of back pain among players. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a daily devotee, lower-back strain can quickly take the fun out of the game.

David Satka, certified PPR coach, says back pain is one of the most common, and preventable, issues players face. “Pickleball requires quick, low movements that can wear on your back,” David explains. “But a few simple changes can make a big difference.”

Here are his top six tips for avoiding and relieving back pain:

1. Reduce Bending Over

Constantly bending at the waist to pick up balls strains your back. Instead, use your paddle to scoop or trap the ball with your foot and lift it. Some clubs even install nets with ball openings to make returns easier.

2. Stretch and Warm Up

Warming up before play is essential, regardless of your age. Dynamic stretches like the Single Leg Crossover, Helicopter Twist, and Seal Stretch to get the back ready for movement are highly recommended.

3. Strengthen Your Core

A strong core, especially the lower back and abs, helps support your spine during play. Simple at-home exercises like “Supermans” or alternating arm/leg lifts on all fours can make a big difference.

4. Don’t Skip Leg Day

Stronger thighs help you get low on the court without straining your back. Try lunges, squats, or chair poses to build leg strength and improve balance.

5. Try Yoga for Flexibility and Strength

Yoga offers both stretching and core strengthening. Basic poses like Cat-Cow and Downward Dog support back health and improve mobility for better court movement.

6. Use Smart Recovery Tactics

After playing, ice your back to reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help in moderation. Consider using a foam roller or massage gun and wearing a compression wrap for extra support.

“These tips are for everyone, whether you’re 25 or 75,” says David. “Pickleball should be something you look forward to, not something you recover from.”

David’s book Winning Pickleball dives deeper into strategies, training tips, and injury prevention techniques for players at every level. It’s available wherever books are sold.

Some players also explore natural options for post-game relaxation and recovery, searching for resources such as THCA Flower Delivery Near Me to support pain management and stress relief.
