Sean Hotchkiss Explores Male Rage and Recovery in New Memoir ‘Hating Women’
Journalist and men’s coach Sean Hotchkiss is opening a conversation about masculinity and emotional struggles and the path toward healthier relationships with his new memoir Hating Women. The book examines the experiences and unresolved pain that shaped his views on women – while sharing lessons from his journey toward accountability and recovery. The book aims to encourage deeper conversations about grief and vulnerability as well as emotional healing among men and the people in their lives.
Sean Hotchkiss’ Hating Women: A Memoir of Male Rage and Recovery is on sale beginning July 21st, according to a press release from the publisher, Simon & Schuster.
A brutally honest confessional that reckons with the darkest parts of the male psyche, Hating Women examines the pain, grief, and suppressed rage that can distort men’s relationships with women—and offers a framework through which men can begin healing themselves and those relationships.
When Hotchkiss was twenty-two, his father died by suicide following his second divorce. In the years that followed, Hotchkiss became determined never to find himself alone. Women became his compass and the measure by which he judged his own worth: if women desired him, he believed he was doing well. He dated and slept with as many women as possible, using sex and validation to avoid confronting his grief and pain.
Then, after another breakup in 2015, Hotchkiss reached his own breaking point. Depressed and suicidal, he began a decade-long journey toward recovery.
Through candid self-examination, Hating Women explores the connection between Hotchkiss’s relationships with women, his unresolved trauma, and the rage he had learned to suppress. What begins as a confession becomes a roadmap for men who want to confront the harm they have caused, reconnect with their emotions, and build lives grounded in vulnerability, responsibility, and respect.
Critical Praise for Hating Women
Publishers Weekly calls the book “a candid account of coming to grips with his thorny relationship with women and himself,” as well as “an antidote for his distress in fully expressing ‘big, wild’ emotions.”
Kirkus Reviews praises it as a “rigorous and revealing self-portrait of familial psychological trauma and the arduous road to recovery,” while Library Journal calls it “a worthy addition to the growing field of men’s studies.”
Jed Diamond, PhD, founder of MenAlive.com, describes the memoir as “powerful, provocative, and helpful for men and women.”
The book has also received praise and coverage from Defector and Unwritten, with forthcoming attention anticipated from Close Read, Bookforum, Scallywag and Vagabond, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and other outlets.
A Growing National Conversation
Hotchkiss is bringing the book’s urgent examination of masculinity, emotional repression, sex, grief, and recovery to audiences across print, digital media, podcasts, and men’s organizations.
His original essay for the Daily Mail, recounting the moment his pursuit of sexual validation finally collapsed, generated significant online attention. Another original piece is scheduled to appear in Playboy on July 23.
Additional author features and conversations are appearing in GQ, Forbes, and Yahoo News, where Hotchkiss addresses the failures of contemporary masculinity and the emotional tools men need to build healthier lives and relationships.
A major podcast rollout includes appearances on:
